Put God First in Whatever You Do!

Contributer Writer: Ann Rhodes

When pay day comes, we look forward to receiving our pay checks so that we can pay our bills and buy other things that we would like to have. Often times we can go into a store and come back with more than what we really wanted to spend. “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through many sorrows (1 Timothy 6:10). A lot of us wonder, what does this scripture truly tell us. If you love money, a material thing, then yes, it can destroy our lives and it can bring much evil to our lives. The love of money can cause us to stray away from our faith and do things that we should not do. But as Christians, we must use our money wisely and not let it take our faith away from us.

In order to be successful with our money and not allow it to over take us, we must first give it back to God, the man who owns everything. In the book of Proverbs, it states, “Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase. So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine” (Proverbs 3:9-10). It is vitally important to give God not only some of your time, but also give a portion of what you have received back to the man who helped you obtain it. Let God know how much you appreciate what he has done for you. If you do this, it will allow you to have a stronger spiritual development. Material things will not take over your life.

As Christians it is important to remember what the book of 1 Timothy tells us in verses 7-9 from chapter 6: “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.” Simply put, if we learn how to use our money wisely and give back to God, the devil will not over take us and lead us into the temptation that will destroy us.
